Celebrating International Recognition Through a New Role in Orthopaedic Research Leadership

This year brings significant international recognition to the department through Dr. Adetola Adesida’s appointment to the Orthopaedic Research Society Board of Directors, alongside major research achievements and honours that highlight a growing global impact in musculoskeletal science.

When the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) announced its newest slate of leaders, one of the appointments drew particular pride within our community: Dr. Adetola Adesida’s election to the ORS Board of Directors as Member‑At‑Large (Established). The role places him within the leadership of one of the world’s most influential scientific societies in musculoskeletal research—an achievement that reflects both international recognition and a career defined by innovation.

Dr. Angela Scharfenberger, Divisional Director says, “The Division of Orthopaedic Surgery is extremely proud of Dr. Adesida’s accomplishments over the past 17 years since he joined our fundamental science research team. He is a sought-after collaborator in many surgical divisions and has become a world leader in cartilage bioengineering. This latest appointment to the most prominent Orthopaedic fundamental science board highlights his acclaim in Orthopaedic research and is very well deserved. He will represent the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and Department of Surgery at the University of Alberta in an exemplary manner.”

That recognition deepened in 2025, when Dr. Adesida was named an ORS Fellow, one of the society’s highest honours. ORS Fellows are selected from among long‑standing members who have demonstrated exceptional service, leadership, scientific achievement, and contributions to the advancement of orthopaedic research. Dr. Adesida and the other Fellows were celebrated during the Plenary Session of the ORS Annual Meeting in February 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona.

That milestone was followed by two further international distinctions later in the year. In October 2025, he was elected a Fellow of the International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies (ICORS) and inducted into the Class of Fellows during ceremonies held in Adelaide, Australia. That same month, he was also elected a Fellow of the International Cartilage Regeneration and Joint Preservation Society, with the induction taking place in Boston, USA.

These honours highlight not only his individual accomplishments but also the remarkable momentum of the Adesida Lab, whose work continues to push the boundaries of cartilage and meniscus tissue engineering.

Advancing the Science of Joint Repair

The Adesida Lab is driven by a clear and ambitious goal: to develop autologous, cell‑based tissue engineering strategies capable of repairing cartilage and meniscus defects. These conditions are common, debilitating, and notoriously difficult to treat, making the lab’s work both scientifically challenging and clinically significant.

The team investigates fundamental and translational questions, including:

  • identifying optimal stem cell sources and factors that promote proliferation and differentiation
  • understanding how anatomical environments influence cell behaviour
  • discovering bioactive molecules that drive chondrogenic and fibrochondrogenic differentiation
  • examining how oxygen tension shapes cellular activity
  • incorporating bioactive molecules into biomaterial scaffolds suitable for clinical use

This research sits at the intersection of chemistry, biology, clinical medicine, bioengineering, and materials science—an interdisciplinary approach that has become a hallmark of the lab’s success.

A Remarkable Year of Research Achievements Leading Into 2025

Recent years have brought a series of significant research awards that reflect the lab’s growing impact and scientific leadership.

Exploring Tissue Engineering in Space

The lab received a 2‑year grant from the Canadian Space Agency for the project: “Understanding the molecular and functional heterogeneity of human meniscus fibrochondrocytes and microtissue models under simulated microgravity and hypergravity.” This work positions the team at the forefront of space‑based biomedical research, exploring how altered gravity environments influence joint tissue biology.

Decoding the Meniscus at the Molecular Level

A 5‑year NSERC Discovery Grant supports the project: “Meniscus Fibrochondrocytes' Surfaceome and Microtissue Mechanics.” This foundational research aims to deepen our understanding of meniscus cell biology and the mechanical properties of engineered tissues.

Engineering Implantable Human Cartilage

A 5‑year CIHR Project Grant funds the lab’s work on: “Towards the development of clinically implantable bioengineered human nasal cartilage grafts.” This project advances translational tissue engineering with direct implications for reconstructive surgery.

Recognizing Innovation in Precision Health

Adding to these achievements, Dr. Adesida received the Mid‑Career Precision Health Innovator Award, which honours faculty whose research has generated novel insights and meaningful contributions to society through precision‑health‑focused innovation.

Dr. Adesida’s leadership roles and honours within the Orthopaedic Research Society reflect a growing international reputation built on scientific excellence, mentorship, and collaborative vision. From pioneering cartilage engineering strategies to exploring how human tissues behave in space, his work continues to expand the possibilities of regenerative medicine. The department is proud to celebrate this moment of international recognition and the continued achievements of the Adesida Lab.
