If you are looking to create short-term employment opportunities for students and/or would like some extra help around your office or lab this summer, you might want to consider applying to participate in a government funded student employment program.

The primary objective of government funded summer student employment programs is to support the creation of temporary jobs for full time students. The expectation is that the temporary jobs will benefit students financially, provide career related experience, and support community priorities.

Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ)

Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) is accepting online applications until January 25, 2019. Faculties and Departments must submit applications directly to Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and will be advised directly whether their application is approved for funding. CSJ is not administered by Talent Acquisition, therefore, each area is responsible for their own applications.

Learn more by visiting the Human Resource Services website.

Summer Temporary Employment Program (STEP)

The Government of Alberta has confirmed that the STEP program will be available in 2019. Talent Acquisition administers this program on behalf of the University of Alberta (U of A); please do not apply directly to the STEP program.

Complete the internal U of A Application Form for each STEP position requested and ensure each application includes a detailed job description along with an authorizing signature from the Department Head or Trustholder. The method of application submission to participate are as follows:

  • Faculties: Send completed internal U of A STEP applications to your Dean’s Office for faculty review and ranking. The Dean’s Office will review and rank the submitted applications and forward the applications to Talent Acquisition (Anjali Robbins) via interoffice mail by February 1, 2019. Talent Acquisition will advise the Dean’s Office on the status of their applications.
  • Administrative Departments, Research Centres and Institutes: Send completed STEP applications directly to Talent Acquisition via interoffice mail by January 25, 2019. The STEP Committee will review and rank applications. Talent Acquisition will advise applicants of their applications.
