What do you love most about science?

Science is such a diverse field and it impacts so many aspects of our life. From health care to our smartphones, it is a rapidly-growing field that is constantly evolving. This is what I find most interesting-there is always something new to discover, and it helps the world we live in.

Why do you think it is important to promote science to young people, and what makes you a good science mentor?

I think it is important to promote science to young people because it can lead to new passions and spark unknown interests. Science is a fun and interactive way for students to apply their ideas and creativity to the real world, and it helps them understand why certain things work the way they do in the environment around us. I love teaching young people, and I can't wait to share my enthusiasm about computer science with others.

Why did you want to work with Science Summer Camps?

I believe working with the Science Summer Camps will be an extremely rewarding experience. I greatly enjoy working with young people because it is amazing to see them grow and learn new things. In addition, they always have something new to teach me. I am excited to share my field of interest with campers this summer.

Can you tell us a fun fact about your favourite scientist or scientific discovery?

Over 6,000 new viruses develop each month.

Tell us a fun fact about you.

I rode a camel and it was the best day of my life.

Allex Rumbles

Intermediate Computing Science leader Allex

Program: BSc in Earth science and computing science, BEd in secondary education

Interests: My favourite things are hiking, skiing, and travelling.

What do you love most about science?

What I love most about science is that is helps me to understand the world around me and find new and exciting ways to approach and solve problems.

Why do you think it is important to promote science to young people, and what makes you a good science mentor?

I think it is important to promote science to young people because science and technology are a huge part of everything we do, and learning about science allows you to develop skills that are beneficial in many areas. I am passionate about all areas of science and I believe I can help provide a fun and positive learning environment.

Why did you want to work with Science Summer Camps?

I wanted to work with science summer camps to share my love of learning with others in a fun setting. It combines my interest in working with young people with my interest in science.

Can you tell us a fun fact about your favourite scientist or scientific discovery?

Ada Lovelace was the first computer programmer and she wrote the first computer algorithm over 150 years ago.

Tell us a fun fact about you.

I have been playing soccer for 18 years.

Josh Smith

Intermediate Computing Science leader Josh

Program: BSc

Interests: Disc Golf, rock-climbing, video games

What do you love most about science?

It's the best way to find out how things work and there are always new things to learn.

Why do you think it is important to promote science to young people, and what makes you a good science mentor?

It's good for youth to learn about a wide range of career paths they can follow, and knowledge of different aspects of science and problem solving skills are useful no matter what path they choose. I hope to be a good mentor by teaching aspects of computer science that are useful and interesting.

Why did you want to work with Science Summer Camps?

To teach youth things about computer science I wish I learned when I was younger.

Can you tell us a fun fact about your favourite scientist or scientific discovery?

Nikola Tesla disliked pearls as they didn't match his idea of the style of a successful person.

Tell us a fun fact about you.

I hope to one day work as a software engineer.
