Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science, and Technology

WISEST: Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science & Technology is a unit of the University of Alberta that has dedicated over 35 years to empowering women in the fields of science, engineering and technology.

Our Programs

Summer Research Program
Participants work as paid research assistants on a project in an area that is less-traditional for their gender for six weeks in July and August. The young women do research in the Faculties of Engineering and/or Science, and the young men are placed in the Faculty of Nursing and/or the Departments of Human Ecology and Nutrition.

Choices Conference
Grade 6 girls and their teachers experience a day of hands-on activities in in science, engineering, and technology.

SET Conference
A one day conference where high school girls in grades 10-12 engage in hands-on activities, meet role models, and discover diverse career paths in science, engineering, and technology.

Two networks — WISER and UA-WiSE — for undergraduates, graduates, and early-career female professionals in science, engineering and technology.

Variety of volunteer opportunities for students, past program participants, young professionals, and more.

Science Odyssey Week: Sign up now to be part of our free live stream event for grade 7-12 students in Rural and Northern Alberta communities. Discovering A Whole New World: A STEM Mentoring Series is taking place on May 15, 16, 17 from 11:30 am - 12:15 pm or 12:15 pm - 12:55 pm. Register by Tuesday, May 15 to participate.

Industry Tours: We are looking for companies willing to host Summer Research Program students for an Industry Tour in early August. This is a chance for the SRP students to gain exposure to innovative work done at your company and engage with professionals! For more information and to participate, contact wisest@ualberta.ca
