Our Faculty is home to a wide range of facilities, which rank among the best-equipped facilities for teaching, research, sport, and recreation of any university in Canada.

North Campus facilities are housed in the Van Vliet Complex, named for the faculty's founding dean, Dr. Maury Van Vliet. Dr. Van Vliet served the University from 1945 to 1978 as a teacher, coach, and administrator.

North Campus facilities include Physical Activity and Wellness Centre, Pavilion, Hanson Fitness and Lifestyle Centre, Wilson Climbing Centre, Main Gym, Clare Drake Arena, gymnasiums, dance studios, multi-purpose studios, various meeting rooms, and classrooms.

In response to the Government of Alberta’s most recent COVID-19 announcement, declaring a state of a public health emergency, Campus & Community Recreation is implementing new mandatory restrictions as required by these orders. The restrictions are expected to be in place until at least January 12, 2021.

All University of Alberta sport and recreation facilities, services, and programs will be closed effective Sunday, December 13, 2020, including:

Van Vliet Complex
  • Hanson Fitness and Lifestyle Centre
  • Wilson Climbing Centre
  • Clare Drake Arena
  • Aquatics Centres
  • Universiade Pavilion (Butterdome)
