ATEP is the canoe beside the big ship. ATEP is a Bachelor of Education degree (B.Ed.) program that paddles alongside the Faculty of Education on the beautiful kisiskâciwanisîpiy (North Saskatchewan River).
kisiskâciwanisîpiy is the lifeblood for Treaty 6 Territory as it has been for countless generations of Indigenous peoples who since time immemorial call this place–amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton)–home.

New ATEP Director - Dr. Shauna Bruno
Dr. Shauna Bruno (Samson Cree Nation, Treaty 6) has been appointed Director of the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP), effective November 1, 2025. Dr. Bruno is a respected nêhiyaw educator, researcher and leader whose work is grounded in wahkohtowin — deep relationality, responsibility and kinship. She brings an impressive record of community-based leadership, most recently serving as Chair of the Maskwacîs Education Schools Commission Board of Governors.
Dr. Bruno holds a PhD in Indigenous Peoples Education from the University of Alberta and has taught at both the University and Maskwacis Cultural College, focusing on Cree language revitalization, land-based education, and teacher preparation rooted in community and Nation-based knowledge.
New ATEP Faculty- Karen West
Karen West will be joining the Faculty of Education on July 1, 2026 as an Assistant Professor, contributing to the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP).
Karen, a member of Sucker Creek First Nation, is a science educator whose teaching is grounded in relationships, place, and Indigenous ways of knowing. She brings more than a decade of K-12 teaching experience across multiple school sites and specialized programs, as well as leadership roles as a curriculum consultant with Edmonton Public Schools and through a secondment to Alberta Education’s First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Branch.
She is currently completing her PhD in Secondary Education, co-supervised by Dr. Dwayne Donald and Dr. Dawn Wiseman, with research examining relationships between science education, land, and Treaty sensibilities.
