Disability Cultures + Access Hub

The University of Alberta is committed to becoming a leader in accessibility, dismantling systemic ableism, and increasing belonging as outlined in Shape: A Strategic Plan of Impact 2023–2033 and supported by other institutional action plans. Guided by the principles in Braiding Past, Present, and Future: University of Alberta Indigenous Strategic Plan, this commitment recognizes the intersectional impacts of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and ableism on equity and accessibility.

To advance these goals, the Council on Systemic Ableism and the Disability Cultures and Access Hub were established as key initiatives to address systemic barriers, transform institutional policies, and promote accessible practices for the benefit of all community members.

Council on Systemic Ableism

The Council, housed within the Office of the Vice-Provost (Access, Community and Belonging ), works collaboratively with disabled knowledge holders to identify and dismantle ableist structures. Through its advisory and decision-making role, the Council informs institutional leaders, oversees accessibility initiatives, and curates resources to foster equity and inclusion across the university.

Disability Cultures and Access Hub

The Hub serves as a centralized resource to coordinate tools, strategies, and awareness programs aimed at reducing barriers and supporting disability-inclusive practices. It addresses issues such as hybrid pedagogy, accessible communications, and inclusive recreation, while identifying systemic solutions to recurring access challenges. The resource hub is currently under construction and will be launched in late Winter 2025.
