From PhD to Industry: Using Optimization and Data Science Skills

Meraj Ajam is a Senior Consultant and Data Scientist at BDO Canada with a PhD in Industrial Engineering and Operations Management. His background spans mathematical optimization, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and prescriptive analytics. He has worked on industry projects involving renewable energy, air traffic systems, forecasting, anomaly detection, NLP, and other data and decision science applications.

Before moving into industry, Meraj worked as a postdoctoral associate at the Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary, where his research focused on supply chain network optimization. His current work involves collaborating directly with clients to translate complex business problems into practical optimization, machine learning, and AI solutions.

Abstract

Moving from a PhD to industry involves more than applying academic models to new problems. In this talk, I will share my journey from research in operations research and mathematical optimization to working as a Data and AI Consultant on real-world projects.

I will discuss how PhD skills such as modeling, optimization, programming, and analytical thinking transfer to industry, along with the need to adapt to business needs, imperfect data, multidisciplinary teams, and practical implementation.

Drawing on examples from renewable energy, air traffic, machine learning, and AI, I will share key challenges, lessons learned, and practical advice for PhD students considering an industry career.
