About the Project 
The Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine (IEU) is the most authoritative and extensive English-language resource dedicated to Ukraine, its people, history, geography, language, culture, and current affairs.
Created and maintained by a dedicated team of scholars and editors at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies (CIUS) in the Faculty of Arts, University of Alberta and the University of Toronto, with contributions from experts around the globe.
The IEU is a free living digital encyclopedia that serves researchers, students, journalists, policymakers, and the global public. It is accessible worldwide, viewed by 1,500+ people a day, and rigorously verified by expert editors.
But, this vital work is only made possible through donor support.

Why the IEU Matters
Ukraine is at the centre of global attention and at the intersection of profound geopolitical transformations. Yet, much of the world still lacks accurate, in-depth knowledge about its history and present.
Understanding Ukraine’s story is key to building lasting peace in Europe and beyond. The Internet Encyclopedia of Ukraine (IEU) makes that understanding possible, bridging the gap between scholarly expertise and global access to reliable knowledge about Ukraine’s past and global present.
- Every article in the IEU is written and reviewed by specialists in their respective fields, historians, linguists, political scientists, and cultural scholars, making it the most comprehensive and authoritative English-language resource on Ukraine.
- Far from simply transferring materials from the original five-volume Encyclopedia of Ukraine (1984–93), the IEU represents a complete re-envisioning of that legacy, an ever-expanding scholarly database that both updates and vastly exceeds the scope of its predecessor.
- New scholarly articles are added daily, covering a wide range of topics, from Ukraine’s wartime resilience to its cultural icons, reflecting current research and ongoing developments.
- The IEU now welcomes around 1,500 visitors per day.
- Since its launch in 2002, more than 63 million direct searches have been conducted on the site.
The importance of the IEU is reflected not only in its readership but also in the threats it faces. As the top organic Google search result for knowledge about Ukraine, the IEU has been the target of repeated cyberattacks, which are often timed to coincide with significant national or historical dates. Thanks to our robust security systems and dedicated oversight, neither the site nor its information has ever been compromised. These attacks serve as stark reminders of the power of truth, and of how vital this resource is in countering misinformation and erasure.
