Resources

A number of resources are available to cancer researchers at the University of Alberta, ranging from valuable cancer specimens and data, to a world-class cell imaging facility at the Cross Cancer Institute.

Alberta Cancer Research Biorepository (ACRB)

The ACRB is an open-access collection of biological samples from many tumor types as well as relevant clinical data that are stored in Calgary and Edmonton to support cancer research across the continuum.

Cell Imaging Facility

The Cell Imaging Facility is located at the Cross Cancer Institute. Providing services in advanced light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, the facility supports cancer researchers within the University of Alberta as well as within public and private sectors, on availability and fee-per-service basis.

Core Facilities, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry’s Core Research Facilities provide access to state-of-the-art equipment for research, including next-generation sequencing, single-cell and spatial transcriptomics, light and electron microscopy, flow cytometry and more. Each facility is staffed by highly-trained experts who provide hands-on training, troubleshooting and personalized consultations.

Cross Cancer Institute (CCI)

Beyond offering diagnosis, treatment and survivorship care for cancer patients, the CCI houses researchers doing discovery research into the primary differences between cancer cells and normal cells, and translational research exploring how cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment discoveries can be moved into practice. The Clinical Trials Unit initiates and conducts trials into new cancer treatment protocols in collaboration with international researchers, and supports Investigator Initiated Trials (IITs) advanced by frontline clinicians.

Human Nutrition Research Unit (HNRU)

The HNRU is housed within the Li Ka Shing Centre at the University of Alberta and supports nutritional assessment and clinical nutrition research.

The Metabolomics Innovation Centre (TMIC)

Serving a variety of academic, government and industry projects, the TMIC offers fee-for-service metabolic profiling. The centre is a nationally-funded core facility and can provide metabolite identification, quantification, and analysis for the study of biomarkers, nutrient profiling, clinical trials research and more.
