"Cell biology has taught me to appreciate how important the small intricacies of a large system are. It is so interesting to not only learn about cells themselves, but the methodology and lab work behind how these things were discovered.”
- Brooke Fitka, 3rd Year Cell Biology Major/Chemistry Minor
The Cell Biology Program Offers...
Cutting-Edge Research Opportunities
At U of A, we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of scientific discovery. Our cell biology students have unique opportunities to participate in exciting research areas like neurobiology, cancer research, and medical genetics. With a program that emphasizes research, you'll work alongside leading experts in world-class facilities, contributing to research that could transform healthcare and our understanding of human biology. Imagine joining groundbreaking studies on the regulation of nervous system function or contributing to new approaches for targeting cancer at the cellular level.
"This program has given me a front-seat view of the expanding field of scientific research. From the cellular mechanisms that sustain life to the complex humans we are, Cell Biology has helped me better appreciate the translation of classroom concepts to my everyday life."
-Amberle Lim, 4th Year Cell Biology Honours
A Modern, Comprehensive Curriculum
Our program covers the fundamental aspects of cell biology, starting with Introductory Cell Biology (CELL 201) and advancing through specialized courses like Advanced Cell Biology (Cell 300/301), Diversity of the Cell (CELL 302), and various 400-level classes such as the Cell Biology of Disease, The Birth and Death of a Cell etc. We also understand that every student has unique interests. That's why our program offers a range of electives in fields like Microbiology, Neuroscience, and Genetics, allowing you to customize your academic experience. With the flexibility to choose from various topics, you'll be able to explore your passions while meeting degree requirements.
“The Cell Biology program has challenged me to think critically and approach problems from different perspectives.”
Ava Ballingall, 3rd Year Cell Biology Honours
Hands-On Learning and Lab Experience
Lab experience is a critical component of the program, where you'll learn to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world problems. With the CELL 398/498/499 course you are able to work within a lab in the department and conduct your own experiments. You could be exposed to various different model organisms (cell culture, fruit flies, mice, etc.) and various different techniques (advanced microscopy, molecular biology, complex organism dissections, etc).
“ The Cell Biology program has connected me with inspiring professors and peers who have made my undergrad experience both fulfilling and memorable.”
-Hailey Westeroth, 4th Year Cell Biology Major/Chemistry Minor
