Programs

The undergraduate chemistry programs at the University of Alberta are designed to provide a broad background in the theory and practice of chemistry.

For the high school graduate, there are three chemistry programs in the Faculty of Science, all of them a minimum of four years long.

BSc Honors

  • Highest level of specialized training in chemistry
  • Prepares you for work as a professional chemist
  • You would be accepted for advanced study anywhere in North America
  • The Honors Chemistry degree is accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry
  • Flexible enough for a second area of study (Minor or second Major in some areas)
  • Senior research in Chemistry is a requirement, so students are guaranteed placement.

BSc Major in Chemistry (Accredited Option)

  • Offers excellent training in chemistry
  • Flexible enough for a second area of study (Minor or second Major in some areas)
  • Prepares you for work as a professional chemist and for pre-professional programs of choice
  • You may be accepted for advanced study in Chemistry (graduate-level) with careful course selection and research training
  • The Accredited Major in Chemistry degree is accredited by the Canadian Society for Chemistry

BSc Major in Chemistry 

  • Offers excellent training in chemistry
  • Maximum flexibility. A second area of study (Minor or second Major) is recommended, but not required
  • Can prepare you for work as a chemist with careful course selection
  • Prepares you for pre-professional programs of choice
  • You may be accepted for advanced study in Chemistry (graduate-level) with careful course selection and research training
