Neuroprognostication After Cardiac Arrest

A multidisciplinary working group based in Edmonton reviewed the most recent Canadian and international guidelines for neuroprognostication after cardiac arrest (NACA). The goal of this review was to develop recommendations in consideration of local resources and informed by a province-wide needs assessment survey. Based on the guidelines, recent research and needs expressed in the survey, the team assembled a toolkit to assist clinicians (SEND physicians, Intensivists, Cardiologists and Neurologists) involved in neuroprognostication after cardiac arrest. The toolkit includes an infographic outlining the two main principles of NACA which are 1. Multimodal approach and 2. Delayed neuroprognostication until after 72hrs post ROSC or rewarming. In addition, there is an in-depth list of confounders and recommended targets as well as an approach to myoclonus. The ultimate aim of this project is to standardize the approach to NACA in the Edmonton corridor for academic and non-academic sites.
