In 1990 the National Gallery of Canada announced the purchase of Voice of Fire a 5.4 x 2.5 metre abstract painting by American artist Barnett Newman for 1.76 million dollars. The purchase set off a cultural and political firestorm across the country in the press, electronic media, Tim Horton’s and kitchen tables alike.

It is against this backdrop that the play Voice of Fire takes place. 1990 in Alberta after the purchase of an abstract painting for 1.76 million dollars and how it affects a family living on an acreage just outside of Edmonton.
