The Activist Book Launch

13 February 2026

Join Professor Daniel Fried (Department of East Asian Studies) on Wednesday, March 18, 7:00-8:30 pm at Audrey's Books (10702 Jasper Ave) for the the launch of The Activist: A Daoist Protest Manual. Daniel will be joined by local artist and community organizer, Jordon Hon, for a discussion of activism in the Chinese community and beyond.

The Activist draws on classical Daoist philosophy's ideas of "acting without action" to propose new, low-conflict modes of 21st-century activism. While high-visibility protest that relies on non-violent conflict can be effective in some situations, the book argues that it is rarely the most effective available option in promoting social change. Instead, inclusive and dialogical interventions grounded in a peaceful spirit can often create meaningful change without backlash.

Copies of the book will be free to current U of A students in attendance at the book launch, with student ID.
