ENGL 222 B1: Reading Race and Ethnicity
U. Umezurike
Although we understand race and ethnicity as constructs—as norms, too—they define and structure our lives and relations. In this course, we will investigate what fiction, poetry, film, and non-fiction say about difference, identity, belonging, and citizenship, and how writers and artists construct and contest these normative categories. Central to our investigation is the question of the human—who is human? What does it mean to be human? In addressing these questions, we will develop critical and decolonial frameworks for deeper understanding of literature, culture, and ideology.
