Hospital medicine is a dynamic and rewarding field that demands clinical excellence, adaptability, compassion, and teamwork. We hope this enhanced skills experience will challenge and inspire you as you develop your practice and shape your future career.

Our Category 2 Program immerses residents in the unique and challenging environment of Hospital Medicine. This curriculum has been designed to provide advanced training, mentorship, and hands-on experience in hospital medicine, helping you build the clinical expertise, leadership skills, and confidence needed to care for increasingly complex hospitalized patients.

With enthusiastic teachers and involved mentors you’ll feel supported at all of our diverse teaching sites across the Edmonton Corridor. There is ample opportunity for rural and regional experiences; with a broad range of electives/selectives to choose from so you have control to design your learning experience to best meet your needs and interests.  

With a comprehensive academic program you will have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge in acute care as well as interdisciplinary collaboration, quality improvement, patient safety, healthcare leadership, advocacy and evidence-based medicine.

Timelines

We are offering 2 positions for the 2027/2028 academic year, with the program beginning in July 2027.

*Admission offers will be shared on a rolling basis between November 24 and December 10, 2026. Once all positions are filled, unsuccessful applicants will be notified.

Application Process

We are looking for excellent, well-rounded candidates who excel in the principles of Family Medicine and are dedicated to mastering the field of Hospitalist Medicine.

Applicants to the incoming academic year must be graduated or in their PGY2 year in a Canadian postgraduate Family Medicine residency training program.

Please note that applications are not submitted through CaRMS. Instead, all materials must be sent directly by email to fmpgy3@ualberta.ca by September 8, 2026.

Applicants are encouraged to outline their learning goals and future practice plans in their application so that their experiences can be tailored to meet their individual needs.

Required Documents

Applicants must submit the following in a single email to fmpgy3@ualberta.ca by September 8, 2026:

1. Completed Application Form
2. Letter of Interest (maximum 1000 words)
   • Describe your interest in the Hospitalist program, including learning objectives and career goals.
3. Curriculum Vitae
   • Include a summary of relevant clinical experience, CME, and/or research.
4. Letter of Support from your Family Medicine Residency Program Director
5. ITERs from your Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, and/or Hospitalist Medicine rotations
   • If you are currently in PGY2, please provide all available reports at the time of application submission.
   • For return-from-practice applicants, please provide an additional reference letter in place of ITERs.
6. Proof of CFPC Exam Completion
   • This may be submitted after acceptance but must be received before the program start date.

Interview Process

Interviews will be panel-style and conducted virtually.

Rural/Regional Locations – Camrose, Grande Prairie, Yellowknife, Fort McMurray, Red Deer, Whitehorse, and potentially many others.
