Access to Information Act (ATIA)

Alberta's Access to Information Act (ATIA) provides a legal right for individuals to request access to records held by public bodies, like the University of Alberta (U of A), including a right of access to personal information about themselves, subject to limited and specific exceptions set out in ATIA. All decisions made under ATIA related to a request for information may be reviewed by the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) of Alberta.

ATIA is in addition to and does not replace existing procedures for access to information or records and does not apply to specific records excluded from the application of ATIA.

Examples of excluded records from access under ATIA include, but are not limited to:

  • Teaching materials of both an employee of a post-secondary educational body and the post-secondary educational body;
  • Research information of an employee of a post-secondary educational body;
  • Information in a court file, and
  • Records in the custody or under the control of the Government of Canada.
