Program Overview

• Research placements for University of Alberta Engineering undergraduate students to train in and work on a research project in a university laboratory
• If the professor at the host university is collaborating with an industry partner, the student may be placed with the company and not in the university laboratory
• Each placement is between 4 and 12 months long.

• Hokkaido University in Hokkaido, Japan (4-8 months)
• Mines Nancy, in Nancy, France (5-8 months) - Internships with Mines Nancy are eligible for a €2000 scholarship
• ENSIC, École Nationale Supérieure des Industries Chimiques, in Nancy, France (5-8 months)
• ENSAIA, École Nationale Supérieure d'Agronomie et des Industries Alimentaires, in Vandoeuvre-lès-Nancy, France (6 to 8 months)
• ENSGSI: École Nationale Supérieure en Génie des Systèmes et de l'Innovation, in Nancy, France (6 to 8 months)
• Telecom Nancy, in Nancy, France (6 to 8 months)
• Polytech Nancy, in Vandoeuvre-les-Nancy, France (6 to 8 months)
• ENIM: Ecole National d’Ingenieurs de Metz, in Metz, France (6 to 8 months)
• ENSEM: L’École nationale supérieure d’électricité et de mécanique de Nancy, in Nancy, France (6 to 8 months)
• EEIGM: Ecole européenne d’ingénieurs en génie des matériaux, in Nancy, France (6 to 8 months)
• UFR ScIFA: Chimie, Physique-Electronique, Sciences de la Vie et de la Terre, Sciences Technologies Santé, in Metz, France (6 to 8 months)

Note: Depending on a student's strengths, academic scheduling, and areas of interest, they may be nominated to a location different from their indicated preference.

A GPA of 3.0 or higher is recommended for this internship.

Application Deadlines + Instructions

Deadlines: Students are recommended to apply at least 6 months prior to their intended start date. 

• Spring/Summer start: November 1
  • Note: if you are interested in Hokkaido for Spring/Summer, please reach out to goabroad@ualberta.ca by the end of September for a better chance at securing a placement. 
• Fall start: March 1
• Winter start: June 1

Instructions/Process:

Step 1: Apply on Horizons and ensure that you include the following in your letter of intent or resume:

• Intended start date/availability
• Duration of your work term(s)
• Preferred host organization/institution 
• Labs/groups/institutes of interest 

Step 2: If you meet basic eligibility requirements, you will be invited to an interview with University of Alberta representatives and informed of next steps, should you be selected to participate.

Fees + Costs

• Placement Fee: $250 
• Most opportunities will provide the student with a small monthly stipend for compensation (typically between $500-$800 CAD).
• Students are eligible to apply for student accommodation in France and Japan. Students going to Germany with DLR will secure their own accommodation.

Students are encouraged to apply for funding even if they do not have a confirmed internship to avoid missing important deadlines.
