University of Alberta students can choose from one of three programs at Queen's University Belfast
The International Summer School in Irish Studies has been running for 19 years. The unique interdisciplinary summer programme is delivered by the Institute of Irish Studies at Queen's, the oldest Irish Studies centre in the world.
Students can further specialize in an area of their interest, choosing two strands:
AHSS International Summer School 2025 Summer School offers international students a three-week introduction to the rich tapestry of historical, cultural, political, environmental, and socio-economic factors that combine to make Northern Ireland a unique place.

Conflict Transformation and Social Justice
A unique opportunity to study conflict transformation in a living case study of a society recently emerging from conflict. Hosted by the renowned Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice, a flagship centre for interdisciplinary research in areas of major societal challenge. The Institute fosters collaborations across various subject areas to address some of the key global challenges faced in seeking fairness, security, prosperity, social harmony and progress. Interdisciplinary programme, drawing on teaching from experts in various disciplines including Law, Politics, International Studies, Geography, Criminology, Anthropology, Psychology and Human Rights. Students taking the programme will examine the theories and practices of conflict transformation from within local and global perspectives, including case studies of Northern Ireland, the Balkans, the Middle East, South Asia and South America, and evaluate how religion impacts peace-building.
This new International Summer School capitalizes on Northern Ireland's long-established culture of storytelling and its significant, diverse contributions to creative industries around the world. Our communities have produced storytellers of international acclaim, from the Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney and the novelist C.S. Lewis to Lisa McGee, the writer of Channel 4's hit TV series 'Derry Girls.'The contemporary creative landscape is also a vibrant environment for aspiring writers, producers, and performers. Emerging voices are given a place to thrive and experiment at Queen's University, which houses the Seamus Heaney Centre, The Sonic Arts Research Laboratory, Brian Friel Theatre, and Queen's Film Theatre.
All of the summer schools include:
- 3-4 weeks based in Belfast, Northern Ireland
- Guaranteed accommodation on campus
- Opportunity to explore Northern Ireland with various cultural and historical field trips, including UNESCO World Heritage site the Giant's Causeway, Titanic Quarter, UK's City of Culture 2013 Derry-Londonderry and home of Northern Ireland's government, Stormont Parliament
- Opportunity to meet and question some of Northern Ireland's decision-makers, including key politicians and church and community leaders
- A varied social programme including a welcome reception, social nights and 'Ceilidh' Night- a night of traditional Irish music and dance

QUB Program Fee: Summer School Fee 2025: £2,995

Students are responsible for their travel arrangements and any additional costs, including visa fees, medical coverage, books and supplies, extra food, entertainment and incidental expenses.
Housing
Summer School participants who choose accommodation for their QUB program fee will stay in QUB's student accommodations, just a 15-minute walk from Queen's main campus (0.9 miles).
You'll be neighbours with the vibrant city centre nightlife, popular restaurants, and local supermarkets. You will also be in the middle of a fantastic coffee culture featuring some of Belfast's most popular independent coffee shops.
You will have an ensuite bedroom and share a kitchen and communal living area with nine or ten other summer school participants. The accommodation also has a self-service laundry facility (equipped with washing machines, dryers, irons, and ironing boards).

For students, Queen's Student Housing is a sensible choice. It is ideal for making friends and settling quickly into university life. It is situated just 15 minutes' walk from the main campus. The site is in a safe location less than 5 minutes' walk from Belfast City Hall and the main shopping district, four miles from George Best Belfast City Airport (with connections to London Heathrow), and 20 miles from Belfast International Airport.
