Sight-Saving Partnership Unites U of A and AHS to Deliver Vital Care to Northern and Indigenous Communities

A groundbreaking medical initiative is redefining how specialized healthcare reaches Canada’s most remote regions by directly bridging academic research with frontline clinical practice.

Founded in 2021 by rheumatologist Dr. Lilia Olaru, the Combined Rheumatology and Ophthalmology Uveitis Clinic serves as a vital pipeline where data-driven discoveries inform daily patient care. In partnership with Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Alberta Retina Consultants, the clinic acts as a real-world testing ground for cutting-edge systemic immunotherapies and innovative healthcare delivery models. This inherently multidisciplinary initiative uniquely unites two distinct university faculties—the Department of Medicine and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (OVS), with Dr. Matthew Tennant leads the OVS playing a key role—breaking down traditional medical silos to treat complex, inflammatory eye diseases.

This collaborative framework has become critical for medical leadership in the Northwest Territories (NWT), who explicitly rely on this Edmonton-based hub to manage complex, sight-threatening autoimmune conditions. Because many of these patients must travel vast distances from remote and rural First Nations communities, the clinic’s operational research focuses heavily on reducing travel burdens and fast-tracking time-to-treatment. By training University of Alberta retina fellows on-site to track patient outcomes and publish new clinical insights, the initiative ensures that frontline AHS delivery actively improves—providing equitable, sight-saving interventions to historically underserved Indigenous populations across Canada's northern corridor.

In recognition of this profound regional impact, the clinic was recently honored with the University of Alberta’s Cooperation, Collaboration, and Teamwork Award. The award celebrates the joint efforts of the interdisciplinary team, recognizing their shared purpose in setting a new standard for how medical faculties teach, research, and deliver care.
