Gratitude and Growth: Dedication of the Kids with Cancer Society Pediatric Cancer Research Lab

It was a special day filled with gratitude and optimism as the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta dedicated HMRC Lab 4-03 as the "Kids with Cancer Society Pediatric Cancer Research Lab." This event celebrated our incredible partnership with the Kids with Cancer Society (KWCS) and recognized their astonishing generosity—nearly $6.3 million donated to the University of Alberta since 1985!

Founded in 1979, KWCS has been an unwavering supporter of pediatric oncology research and care. Their generosity has made a vast difference, funding essential clinical trials and research projects through organizations like the Cancer Research Institute of Northern Alberta (CRINA) and the Women and Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI).

The newly named lab will be a vital research center, led by our own Lesley Mitchell, who holds the prestigious Muriel and Ada Hole, KWCS Chair in Pediatric Oncology. This lab represents our commitment to advancing research and treatments for children fighting cancer.

We were thrilled to have key members from KWCS with us at the ceremony, including Chelsea Draeger Hughes, CEO of KWCS; Tracey Thurston, Director of Development; and members of the Hole family—Becky and Heather Hole, and Laurie Broadway, daughter of Ada Hole. Members from the Department of Pediatrics were also in attendance including Dr. Sarah McKillop who gave an insightful talk about multiple clinical trials being done in this space.

KWCS's impact goes beyond funding clinical trials; they support initiatives like the Paul Grundy Pediatric Cancer Research Lectureship, the David Eisenstat Summer Studentship in Pediatric Oncology, the KWCS Seed Grant competition in pediatric cancer research (led by CRINA), and the KWCS Graduate Studentship. These programs are crucial for nurturing education, mentorship, and innovation in pediatric oncology.

This lab dedication isn't just about honouring past generosity but our ongoing commitment to making strides in pediatric cancer care. The Kids with Cancer Society Pediatric Cancer Research Lab is a testament to community, compassion, and collaboration in our fight against pediatric cancer.
