Office of the Vice-Provost (Indigenous Programming & Research)

The University of Alberta has been working towards implementing the Truth & Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action in thoughtful, meaningful and sustainable ways.

The goal is to ensure that the University of Alberta is a welcoming and safe environment for Indigenous students, staff, faculty and community members and that programs and strategies reflect the institutional commitment to engaging Indigenous perspectives. With that goal in mind, the Indigenous Programming and Research Portfolio was established in the Office of the Provost & Vice-President (Academic) to facilitate institutional collaboration and communication to support the development and implementation of programs, services and initiatives related to Indigenous engagement. The office is also working to enable transformative institutional practices that respect and honour Indigenous knowledges across the University of Alberta.

Key aspects of the Vice-Provost’s mandate include:

  • Leading the development, consultation and approval of an Indigenous Strategic Plan in support of the objectives of the University of Alberta's strategic plan, For the Public Good and institutional Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity initiatives
  • Developing and implementing ethical policies and procedures to guide research engagement with Indigenous communities
  • Building and nurturing positive relationships with Indigenous communities in Alberta
  • Supporting the work of Faculties and Departments to Indigenize curricula across programs
  • Fostering a supportive environment for Indigenous faculty, staff and students

Councils & Committees

Below are Councils & Committees that are chaired or co-chaired by the Vice Provost (Indigenous Programming & Research)

Indigenous Advisory Council

During the past 4.5 years, the Indigenous Advisory Council (IAC), composed of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis U of A employees, offered critical leadership and input on developing Braiding Past, Present and Future: University of Alberta Indigenous Strategic Plan. The IAC also contributed to discussions on broader Indigenous initiatives in SHAPE (A Strategic Plan of Impact), Forward with Purpose (A Strategic Plan for Research and Innovation) and the Student Experience Action Plan. This includes the Indigenization of curriculum and programs, work concerning respectful and ethical research protocols with Indigenous peoples and communities; building a safe and welcoming university for Indigenous students, faculty and staff; and establishing respectful relationships with Indigenous Nations, communities and organizations. The IAC meets on a monthly basis.

If you wish to join the Indigenous Advisory Council, please email iioffice@ualberta.ca.

Indigenous Research Strategy Task Force

Over the past 3.5 years, a collective of Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers and collaborators have met to discuss Indigenous-engaged and Indigenous-led research at the U of A. The task force includes individuals who are connected with each of the following units at the U of A: research data management, research ethics, research services, field research, Vice-President Research and Innovation, plus Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars who volunteered. The task force meets on a monthly basis to hold conversations around Indigenous-focused research at the U of A as we imagine the structures and supports for processes that fully support Indigenous-engaged research at the U of A.

If you wish to join the Indigenous Research Strategy Task Force, please email iioffice@ualberta.ca.

Inuit Community Engagement

The Inuit Community Engagement team is a newly formed group that is an outcome of a former group focused on Inuit Content in U of A Programs. The team is focused on enhancing Inuit Student engagement on campus
