The Peter Lougheed Schools were established to build on the enduring legacy of Alberta’s 10th premier, a proud University of Alberta graduate, and one of Canada’s most respected political leaders. Peter Lougheed showed how democratic processes, principled leadership, and civil debate can transform a province and strengthen a nation. The Lougheed Schools aim to inspire and empower generations of ethical and interdisciplinary leaders who will apply their knowledge and innovative thinking to address complex challenges.
Together, the Lougheed Schools seek to synergize expertise in the arts, social sciences, education, business, and law to cultivate the next generation of engaged citizens and principled leaders for Alberta, Canada, and beyond.

Peter Lougheed School of Politics and Democracy (PLSPD)
The PLSPD’s aim is to cultivate new generations of leaders with the political acumen and practical insights necessary to engage in complexity with confidence and purpose. The School equips students from any faculty with the skills to navigate differences, debate constructively and lead with purpose. Learners are immersed in the principles of pluralism, preparing them for careers that engage Canada’s multi-partisan democracy, whether in politics, civil service, law, business, healthcare, education or beyond. The PLSPD also extends its reach beyond campus, advancing democratic literacy for the public good, sparking civic dialogue and problem-solving across communities.
About Peter Lougheed
As an alumni of the University of Alberta ('52), Lougheed established himself as a leader during his academic journey. He served as the President of the Students' Union, was the Sports Editor for the Gateway newspaper, held a leadership role in his fraternity, and was a Golden Bear football player. These formative experiences set the stage for his subsequent political career.
Lougheed's revolutionary leadership reshaped Alberta. He attracted and inspired creative and productive communities to imagine a future that was different from the present and to translate plans and visions into reality. Throughout his career, he was committed to strengthening democratic processes, transcending partisanship, and promoting diverse ideas through robust democratic institutions, civil society, and public service.
