PhD candidate Andrea DeKeseredy receives the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship

Andrea DeKeseredy is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology. She received her Master’s of Sociology from the University of Alberta and her Master’s of Social Work from West Virginia University. She also holds a Bachelor of Social Work from Toronto Metropolitan University. Her research interests include labour policies, family-to-work conflict and public health issues related to vaccinations and viral illness. Her doctoral research explores how changing Canadian policies within multiple institutions shape the lives of working mothers.

Andrea is also a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholar. She has written five refereed journal publications and seven book chapters. Her first co-edited book, Celebrity Mothers: Negotiating Fame, Gender and Mothering is being released in the fall of 2026. Andrea has also co-authored multiple opinion pieces on issues in Canada, which have been featured in national news outlets across the country. She has been interviewed for her expertise in The Globe and Mail, CBC National News and CTV Canada.
