Drawing Connections: Comics in Art Therapy Practice.

This lecture explores how comics can invite clients into a transitional 'magic circle' of play, narration, and healing. Drawing from the chapter, Rakshanda discusses how comics support a phenomenological encounter with self, helping clients navigate complex themes such as identity and trauma in both individual and group settings. The session includes hands-on comic art experientials, inviting participants to engage directly with sequential storytelling as a therapeutic tool. No prior drawing experience is required.
Rakshanda Khan is a Registered Psychotherapist and Registered Art Therapist who believes that art, imagination, and community are essential tools for healing. She nurtures a soft landing place for individuals, groups and families to gently untangle old patterns and envision new futures. Rakshanda is experienced in supporting overwhelmed caregivers seeking family cohesion, neurodivergent children, and BIPOC individuals navigating intergenerational trauma, race, and identity. Her practice is neurodiversity-affirming, anti-oppressive, and deeply rooted in the creative wisdom held within the body. Rakshanda's scholarly interests include graphic medicine, digital and online creative processes, as well as traditional arts practices to guide healing. She serves as the Research and Publications Director for the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA) and co-facilitates (Re)Centering Belonging, CATA's monthly drop-in group for BIPOC/Racialized art therapists.
