Children in Kenya face a devastating reality: while liver disease affects nearly 830,000 children under 20, pediatric liver transplantation, the life-saving treatment for end-stage liver disease, is only available in one sub-Saharan African country, leaving huge disparities between those who can afford costly treatment abroad and those who cannot.

Electronic Medical Records promise to revolutionize healthcare in urban slums, but this study conducted in Kibera—Nairobi's largest slum with nearly one million residents—reveals that technical challenges are only part of the story. The biggest barriers to sustainable EMR implementation are surprisingly social, not technological.
