Overview

Management at all levels has a dramatic impact on the performance of an organization, influencing areas from productivity and growth to profitability and employee retention. Organizations count on people to excel at decision-making, problem-solving, motivation methods, and strategic planning. 

The Management Development Certificate program from the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta provides a solid grounding in managerial techniques and processes, while also equipping learners with the specific skills needed in management and supervisory positions. Courses within this program cover topics like human resource management, financial management, marketing, strategic management, and business communication, among others.

Audience

Designed for individuals in supervisory or management positions who wish to upgrade or sharpen their managerial abilities, this program will also benefit prospective or aspiring managers ready to take the next step in their careers. Students from all sectors (government, industry, not-for-profit organizations, or small to large enterprise) have completed this career-enhancing program to build relevant skills.

Program Plan


This part-time program is comprised of three core courses and 156 hours of electives. Typical course load is one to two courses per term, three terms a year. When following this structure, students can fulfill the certificate requirements within two to three years. 

Courses do not have to be completed in any specific order, allowing students to choose the courses that best fit their schedule in any given term. Please note that it is recommended for students to complete Strategic Management closer to the end of their program. 

Evening, weekday, and weekend learning opportunities are available to accommodate a variety of schedules. A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 is required to obtain the certificate (3.5 or higher earns a certificate with distinction).

The requirements below apply to students enrolled in and after July 2017. If you entered the program prior to July 2017, please refer to the requirements that apply to your certificate.

  • Core courses (3)

    Courses do not have to be completed in any specific order. However, it is recommended that Strategic Management be taken closer to the end of the program.

  • Elective courses (156 hours)

    Electives can be taken at any time during the program, provided that the appropriate prerequisites have been met.

Transferability

Many of the electives are also part of other programs, such as professional development series in Project Management, Change Management, Business Analytics and Business Strategy. Some of the electives are also part of the Advanced Certificate in Leadership. Qualifications & Admission

Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to obtain the certificate. You may apply for admission as you start your studies or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses.

Tuition & Fees

  • A one-time application fee of $100 is required for admission into the program.
  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes; courses are GST-exempt.
  • Some courses require a textbook at an additional cost.

You can register for a course without enrolling in the program. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course(s) you’ve taken will be applied toward your certificate.

Classes are held at Enterprise Square, downtown Edmonton, Alberta. For a few elective courses, students can choose between online and classroom delivery.
