The construction industry is one of the largest economic driving forces in Alberta and Canada. The University of Alberta’s Construction Management & Administration Certificate explores the planning, technical, financial, and legal aspects of the construction business to allow learners to develop and expand their managerial skills and advance their careers. 

If you work in the construction industry and are seeking a competitive edge to further your career, the Construction Management & Administration Certificate will greatly increase your ability to compete and succeed.

Courses in this program are accredited for the Gold Seal certification (Canadian Construction Association) and for the Blue Seal certificate (Alberta Advanced Education—Apprenticeship and Industry Training).

Select courses within this program are recognized by the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors toward the Professional Quantity Surveyor and Construction Estimator Certified designations.

This program will be of value to practising construction professionals and those wishing to transition into the field. Students in the Construction Management & Administration Certificate come from professions such as construction administrators, project managers, and project engineers, or work in related fields and seek to move into administration/management roles. 

The program will also be of benefit to engineering or architectural technicians, planners, estimators, surveyors, contractors, owners, developers, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, real estate agents, or anyone whose work requires a strong grasp of construction management and  administration fundamentals and who are seeking a competitive edge.

Program Plan

The Construction Management & Administration Certificate is comprised of five 39-hour core courses, one 21 hour core seminar, and a minimum of 39 hours in elective courses, for a total of 255 instructional hours. This part-time program is typically completed within one to three years, but students have up to six years to fulfill their program requirements.

Courses are face-to-face and web-enhanced. Some courses may have pre- or post-class assignments in addition to the scheduled face-to-face classroom work. Schedules are flexible and designed to accommodate the needs of those holding full-time jobs.

    Electives can be taken at any time during the program, provided that the appropriate prerequisites have been met.


If you have completed a course from Edmonton Construction Association (ECA) or BuildForce Canada within the last five years that is applicable to the Construction Management & Administration program, you may qualify for up to 21 hours of elective course fulfillment credit: view details »

Qualifications & Admission

Enrolling in the program is a requirement if you want to earn the certificate. You may apply for admission as you start your studies or, if you prefer, after you have taken one or more courses. 

To enrol, you must have a minimum of a high school diploma (or equivalent) and two years of related work experience. If you attended high school in Alberta, transcripts may be ordered from Alberta Education at 780-427-5732; for high schools outside of Alberta, contact the corresponding provincial department of education.

  3. Submit your completed application, along with the transcript and a $100 admission fee.

Tuition & Fees

  • A one-time application fee of $100 is required for admission into the program.
  • Tuition is paid on a course-by-course basis as you register for your classes; courses are GST-exempt.
  • Electronic course materials for web-enhanced courses will be available in eClass at no extra charge.
  • Some courses require a textbook at an additional cost.
  • We have scholarships and awards available to our certificate students.
  • This program is eligible for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant.

Courses Offered

You can register for a course without enrolling in the program. If later you decide to apply for the full program, the course(s) you’ve taken will be applied toward your certificate. Alternatively, you may opt for auditing a course, in which case you will not be evaluated for any coursework — audited courses, however, cannot be applied toward the certificate at any time.
