Canadian Centre for Ethnomusicology

Hosted by Dr Michael Frishkopf and The Canadian Centre for Ethnomusicology, students from The Bamboo Shield Program run by the Centre for Race and Culture were recently invited to the University of Alberta for a unique learning opportunity. Students, who hailed from countries including Burma, Iraq, Sudan, Uganda, Somalia, Ethiopia and Tanzania, were introduced to world music through a variety of fascinating presentations including live music performed by local musicians and Department of Music students, presentations of different musical instruments, and the learning new songs.

"My students were absolutely thrilled with their experience! Besides learning about world music, they also got their first look at the University and tasted a bit of the excitement of being in a dynamic centre of learning. The impact of this event on the students is evident in their desire to return to the department to learn more."
- Elsa, Project Coordinator, Bamboo Shield Project

Special thanks to Dr Michael Frishkopf, Jonathan Kertzer of folkwaysAlive!, and Department of Music students for creating such an important learning opportunity.
