"I believe that there is a such a thing as self-ordination, when a person decides to devote himself to a life work such as that of a scholar."

S. Howard Bartley

Welcome to the Association of Professors Emeriti website!

We are a busy organization of over 100 members, which is active in the University of Alberta community. Our association was established in 1986 with the goal to provide retired university staff with an avenue of contact with the university community and is continuing successfully, 34 years later, to serve as a meeting ground for members of all scholarly backgrounds.

The development of the Association began with the emeriti Dr. Tom Nelson, Dr. Earle Waugh, and Prof. Sharon Brintnell, who sought to redress the absence of provisions that support continuation and development of the research, professional, and public service roles that emeriti had previously filled.

The original committee, chaired by Dr. Earle Waugh, quickly garnered interest both within and beyond the University community. Extensive surveys organized in January, 1987, revealed that over 80% of respondents were in favour of an organization such as ours. Further results of this survey revealed an interest in the establishment of an association that would facilitate the individual and collective development of the University of Alberta emeriti, as well as safeguarding their status and privileges.

With support from the federal government, the Department of Advanced Education, as well as the University President at the time, Dr. Myer Horowitz, the Association was soon set up in its first office location in Garneau. A registry and newsletter, still in effect today, were developed, while in May 1987, the Constitution of the Association was formed. The Membership is comprised of retired academics, librarians and senior administrators.

Today, the Association has its office in Emeritus House, where our Office Assistant works from 1:00 - 4:00 pm on Tuesdays, and where the meetings of most Interest Groups are held.
