A Note about CHOICES 2021 

Due to the ongoing global pandemic and the restrictions in place about large group events, WISEST is running the CHOICES conference virtually! WISEST is dedicated to encouraging young people to explore fields in which their gender is currently underrepresented. Grade 6 Girls and gender minority students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities, hear from inspiring speakers, and interact with STEM role models!

Science, Engineering & Technology are open doorways to the wonders of our world. The CHOICES Conference invites you to step through those doorways and experience this first-hand.

Each year, 600 Grade Six girls and their teachers come to this event. WISEST has impacted over 18,019 students and 4439 teachers since beginning in 1991. Teams of up to four girls from each school plus their teacher or principal spend the day at the University of Alberta.

Important Dates

Registration opens: November 30, 2020 Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis.  Spaces will be held for rural and underserved schools.

Payment and forms deadline: January 13, 2021
Due to the high demand for spots, after the deadline, any schools/students with incomplete registrations will forfeit their spots which will be offered to schools on our lengthy waitlist.

Event Details

February 17 & 18 (In-School Groups only)

Event 1: In-School Groups - February 17 & 18
(your groups will participate in one of the two days).

Grade 6 girls and gender minority students will participate in a brief introduction, exciting demonstrations, a hands-on activity led by one of our mentors and be involved in a design challenge for prizes!

When: 9:00 am- 12:00 pm 
Where: At your school, through a virtual platform
Who: Your school can register up to 3 groups of 4 grade 6 girls or gender minority students (groups of 4 students should be in the same class/cohorts). 

Cost: The cost of this event covers an activity kit containing materials for the hands-on activity and group challenge for 4 students. The cost is $40 with free pick up, or $10 extra for shipping within Edmonton city limits or $15 for outside Edmonton city limits. 

Event 2: For students working virtually at home - February 19 

Students will participate in a brief introduction and talk with one of our inspiring youth council members. They will be able to see exciting demonstrations, participate in a panel discussion with STEM role models and be involved in a design challenge for prizes!

When: Feb. 19, 2021, 9:00 am- 11:00 am
Where: At home on a virtual platform.
Who: Grade 6 girls and gender minority students participating in virtual schooling at home or homeschooling. 

Cost: The cost for the Virtual CHOICES conference is $10 per student/activity kit with free pick up or $5 extra if shipping is required. The cost covers the activity kit students will receive for challenge project. 

Registration: Students who are doing school virtually should be registered individually by their teachers. Homeschooled students may be registered by their parents. Space is limited to 4 students per teacher or parent and spaces will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

    Please note that there are a limited number of positions available to each school district, so register early!

 

Registration

Registration for the CHOICES Conference is done by schools (teachers or administrators) and not by individuals (parents or students). If you are a parent, the school administrators throughout the Greater Edmonton Area will be emailed to inform them when registration for the CHOICES Conference will open, but feel free to encourage them or your child's grade 6 teacher to apply to come.

There are a limited number of spots available to each school district so register early as registration is based on "first come-first served". Registration is not considered complete until all forms and payment have been received by the WISEST office.

Registration Process

1. Request to Attend

Reserve your students' seats for Feb. 17 or 18th by completing our online CHOICES Conference School Registration. Reserve your virtual student’s seats for Feb. 19th by completing the online CHOICES Virtual Student Registration form

Please remember which date you select as your preference. Once we receive this portion of your registration, WISEST will strive to be in contact within 5 business days to confirm if you have received "reserved spots" (which is based on the availability of spaces) or if you have been placed on the "waitlist". We will also confirm your selected date and provide a payment link. If you receive the "reserved spots" email confirmation, you will need to complete STEP 2.

2. Complete Student and School Forms

To participate in CHOICES, download and complete the Authorization to Reproduce Physical Likeness/Voice and Name forms for each student participating.

Return all original forms to WISEST by the deadline, along with an online payment or cheque made out to the University of Alberta. Please note that you may email the form to the office at wisest.events@ualberta.ca. We do not accept faxed forms.
3. Payment

With your "reserved spots" email confirmation, you will receive a link to the online payment system (which is our preferred method of payment). Follow the email link to make the payment for the students before January 8, 2021. 

As the WISEST office team is currently working remotely, receiving cheques is a challenge so we would appreciate if at all possible, that payments be made through the online payment system.  

If you are required by your school administration to make payment by cheque, then payment can be sent to the WISEST office by the January 8th deadline and please ensure cheques are made out to: University of Alberta.  Note that the time to process these payments will be delayed.
