The Department of Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Management

The Department of Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Management (SEM) is a world-class research and teaching-oriented department. We are ranked highly in Canada with respect to publications in top tier journals and our faculty members have received many teaching awards including the coveted 3M award. In addition, we also have a flourishing PhD program.

Over the past 25 years, we have assembled a very accomplished and unique cohort of scholars who consider a wide range of topics/contexts through the lens of sociological and organizational theories (e.g., entrepreneurship; organizational/institutional/cultural change; social movements; sustainability; technological innovation; strategic management; symbols, communication; legitimacy and reputation; professions and professional work/identity). We have other scholars who draw upon psychological theories to study a range of topics such as human resources management (e.g., motivation and rewards) and organizational behavior (e.g., leadership; productivity and well-being). As a department, we study macro-level to micro-level phenomena and skillfully apply a diverse range of research methods and analytic strategies. We have expertise in qualitative research, field experimentation, advanced multivariate statistics, and in (big) data analytics.

Many of our faculty serve on editorial boards, hold tri-council research grants, and are actively involved in their respective professional and academic communities. Our work is highly cited and we bring a lot of status to the School and the University.
