Stuttering is a communication challenge that causes the flow of speech to be broken up by repetitions, prolongations, or abnormal stoppages of sounds and syllables. It is estimated that over 300,000 Canadians are unable to order their favourite food, express their feelings or say what they want because of their speech.

The Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research (ISTAR) is a self-funded institute of the University of Alberta's Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. We offer specialized treatment to children, teens and adults who stutter. In addition, we conduct research into stuttering, offer advanced professional training for speech-language pathology students and clinicians, and promote public awareness of stuttering and its treatment.
An internationally sought after center of excellence in innovative and accessible communication treatment, research, and education. The supportive and collaborative approach at ISTAR transforms the lives of clients, families, staff, and community partners.
Our highly skilled, specialized clinicians and researchers provide evidence-based treatment, research, and education. We partner locally, nationally, and globally to further the science and treatment of communication disorders. We increase awareness and accessibility of our services through our relationships with community organizations, donors, and volunteers.
For more than 31 years, ISTAR has remained committed to its mission of changing lives by helping to prevent and remediate stuttering and improve communication in people of all ages.
As a not-for-profit organization, ISTAR is heavily reliant upon donors and community support. Any gift made will help individuals by reducing financial barriers to stuttering treatment and enabling them to access a program that is potentially life transforming.
