October is Cyber Security Awareness Month. This month, we're taking a closer look at ransomware to define what it is and offer tips for how to protect against it. As the number of cyber-attacks continue to rise it is more important than ever to understand how cyber-attacks happen and steps you can take to protect yourself online.

What is ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malware that is unintentionally downloaded onto a system when a user visits a malicious or compromised website.

How does ransomware work?

Ransomware works by restricting access to your system by locking the affected computer screen or the affected computer's files. Affected users may be exploited for a monetary reward (ransom) in exchange for unlocking their files or computer screen.

How can I protect against ransomware?

  • Avoid opening emails from unverified senders or clicking links within unverified emails. See how Google is introducing new features to make email safer: New Security Enhancements in Gmail
  • Use anti-virus and anti-ransomware programs to protect against attacks.
  • Run updates on your computer regularly to ensure software is up-to-date.
  • Use Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides or store other file types securely in Google Drive. Google's cloud helps protect against threats of harmful software, including viruses and ransomware. See more information on Google Drive and how it protects against ransomware.
