Search process for provost and vice-president (academic) launched

The U of A community is invited to share input about the role of the provost and vice-president (academic) to inform the search process.

The University of Alberta Main Quad, on May 1, 2020

In the coming days, the University of Alberta will launch a search to fill the provost and vice-president (academic) position.

Since July 1, 2022, this key position has been held in an interim capacity under the leadership of Dr. Verna Yiu. Dr. Yiu is a well-respected and long-serving member of the U of A community and, over the past year, has advanced the university’s academic mission, most notably leading the university strategic plan’s steering committee. I am most grateful for her skilled leadership and significant contributions to the U of A community.

In accordance with the UAPPOL policy, I will chair the search to fill the provost and vice-president (academic) role. I will be supported by a search committee consisting of members of the board of governors, general faculties council, statutory deans’ council, students’ union, graduate students’ association, NASA and AASUA.

We have engaged DHR Global as the search firm that will help us conduct this national and international search.

The provost position is a critical role for the university. Your input will be vital to this search process. We have established a survey for the community to provide their input into the position. This information will help shape the process and inform the search. The survey will be open until midnight on Sept. 25. Please take some time to provide your feedback.

When we have gathered and incorporated the feedback, we will post the position. Once posted, I will share it publicly.

In the meantime, we will establish the search committee and plan to have the first meeting in early October, with the goal of having the position announced by the end of the year.
