How to Apply

Applying to study or work abroad is easier than ever before! The application process is two-fold: pre-nomination and post-nomination. Follow the instructions below and you'll have your application done in no time.

TIP: Start your application at least 2 weeks before the set deadline in order to complete all of the required steps. Early submissions are always welcome! See the deadlines here.

Exchanges and Summer Programs

  • 1. Find a Program
    Explore the nearly 200 programs we offer by searching our Program Finder
    Choose the top three institutions which you want to attend. We ask that you provide us with three options just in case we aren’t able to match you with your first choice. We'll do our best to place you in your first choice, but some programs are more competitive than others.
  • 2. Create an online account and apply in Horizons

    Create an account on Horizons, our online application portal. All applications to education abroad programs must be completed in Horizons.

    Applying in Horizons:

    > Step 1: Submit an unofficial transcript along with your GPA. We will determine your eligibility based on this portion of your application. If you are eligible, we will send you an email notifying you to proceed to Step 2-5.
    > Step 2: Submit supporting documents. Required documents for each program will be listed and provided in your online application.
    > Step 3: Submit a reference request. You'll be asked to enter your reference's name and email and the system will automatically send the request to the professor or TA. Once your reference has completed and submitted the form sent to them, this section will show up as "reference approved."
    > Step 4: Submit your application!
    > Step 5: Proceed to payment. You must pay the $250 application fee by the set deadline.

     
  • 3. Get nominated by Education Abroad

    Congratulations, your application to Education Abroad has been successful! 

    > Now, we will nominate you to your host institution. You'll receive a nomination email instructing you how to directly apply the school you were matched to.

Internships

  • 1. Find a Program
    > Explore the nearly 200 programs we offer by searching our Program Finder
    > Choose up to three internship programs you want to participate in. We ask that you provide us with three options just in case we aren’t able to match you with your first choice. We'll do our best to place you in your first choice, but some programs are more competitive than others.
  • 2. Create an online application account and Apply to Horizons

    Create an account in Horizons, our online application portal. All applications to education abroad programs are to be completed in Horizons.

    Apply in Horizons: 

    > Complete your application. This includes submitting supporting documents and paying a $250 application fee by the set deadline. Required documents for include two references (including a professional reference), an official transcript, a letter of intent, and an up-to-date curriculum vitae.
    > Some programs include interviews as part of the application review process. We will contact you if you’re required to have an interview.

     

  • 3. Get nominated by Education Abroad

    > Congratulations, your application to Education has been successful! Now, Education Abroad will nominate you to your host institution/program. You'll get a nomination email instructing you how to apply directly to the program you were matched to.

After you've been nominated by Education Abroad, your application moves into the post-nomination stage. Go to the After Submitting My Application section to learn about the next steps you'll need to take to finalize your application.

Record Retention Policy 

Student applications for education abroad programs through the Education Abroad Office including exchange (outgoing and incoming), summer, internship (incoming and outgoing), as well as Education Abroad Awards, will be retained one year after the appeal period has expired or after a decision was communicated. After the year has expired application files will be destroyed and/or deleted. Student information with an instance (e.g. risk management related, etc) and UGo registration will be retained for two years from the date information was supplied. After the two years have expired all personal information will be destroyed and/or deleted. Financial files will be retained for seven years after information was supplied. After the seven years have expired files will be destroyed and/or deleted. Paper files will be securely shredded and electronic files will be permanently deleted from electronic databases.
