What do we do?

»As it says in our official mission statement: The Let's Talk Science Partnership Program strives to improve Science literacy through leadership, innovative educational programs, research and advocacy. We motivate and empower youth to use science, technology and engineering to develop critical skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to thrive in our world. The Partnership Program reaches thousands of youth and educators annually through its nation wide programs.

»As a teacher in the program you would be paired with a volunteer from the University. Our volunteers are typically graduate students from various departments in the Faculty of Science, however undergraduates and professors are encouraged to get involved with the program as well. Like every Partnership Program host site, the individual partnerships are unique. This program is offered at no cost to teachers or volunteers, ensuring that all potential volunteers, teachers and schools have access to this excellent program. All transportation and material costs costs you may accumulate as a teacher are covered by the program!

To get you thinking about possibities; our volunteers have:

»Kept teachers informed of current developments in Science

»brought science demonstrations to children

»helped perform experiments in school classrooms

»discussed career opportunities

»given tours of research laboratories

»mentored students for Science fair projects

»judged Science fair projects

»And much, much more!

How do teachers benefit?

»Participating teachers gain the experience of a one-on-one relationship with a current University of Alberta researcher. With your suggestions and guidance, our volunteers can put together a set of activities or demonstrations that fit the particular needs of your classroom, and help satisfy key curriculum goals that you’d like us to address. We offer to teachers a point of contact with the scientific community, and allow teachers to take advantage of the particular interests of the researcher that they are partnered with. Your students benefit from interacting with a diverse group of scientists from the University of Alberta, who act as positive role models for your students. Our volunteers provide an opportunity for your students to have a relationship with a scientist on a personal level, to show them that anyone can be a scientist. We engage your students in the process of scientific inquiry, and help them to develop an understanding and appreciation of the science behind their everyday lives.

»If you are interested in joining the program just send us an email at the U of A Partnership Program. We can answer any questions you may have. email: ltspp@ualberta.ca One small caveat though is that we almost always have more interest from teachers, than from graduate students. Thus, we cannot always guarantee that registration in the program will lead to a partnership right away.
