Application Process

1. Important Dates

Application Deadlines:

  • Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents: August 20, 2024 @ 10 a.m. MT (or 12 p.m. ET)
  • Foreign Sponsored Trainees: July 31, 2024

Interview Dates:

  • Program Information Session: September 9, 2024 
  • Interview Days:  September 10, 12, 13, and 20, 2024

Interviews will be approximately 25 minutes in length and conducted online via a videoconferencing platform. The interview panel will consist of the Program Director, Cardiology Lead Residents, and select Cardiology faculty and staff members. The Program Coordinator will also attend interviews in the capacity of note-taker and IT support.

 

2. Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents

If you are a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident currently enrolled in a Core Internal Medicine residency program at an accredited Canadian or American institution, submit your application through the CaRMS website for the Medicine Subspecialty Match (MSM). Before submitting your application, review the Eligibility Considerations, and if eligible, prepare the required documents listed in The Application.

 

3. Foreign Sponsored Trainees

The University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry has formal postgraduate medical education training agreements in place with the following foreign governments and entities:

  • Bahrain Defense Force Royal Medical Services
  • Istanbul Medical Centre
  • Kuwait Ministry of Health
  • Oman Medical Specialty Board
  • Saudi Arabia Ministry of Higher Education
  • United Arab Emirates Ministry of Higher Education

If you are currently enrolled in a Core Internal Medicine residency program at an accredited Canadian institution and sponsored by one of the above listed foreign entities:

  • The application deadline is July 31, 2024.
  • Applications are to be submitted directly to the University of Alberta Postgraduate Medical Education office by email to pgspon@ualberta.ca.
  • Applications must include a copy of a test score report from an academic version of one of the following English Language Proficiency (ELP) tests:

Foreign Sponsored Trainees are not eligible to apply through the CaRMS Medicine Subspecialty Match.

 

4. The Application

Applicants are advised to provide only the documents requested by the program. No other documents submitted will be reviewed. Incomplete applications as well as any applications or supporting documents submitted after the application deadline will not be considered.

Required Documents

  • Three letters of reference of which one must be a letter of reference from the applicant’s current Core Internal Medicine Program Director
  • Current Resume / CV
  • Medical School Transcript
  • Personal Letter

Additional Documents

  • Current Photo: we ask applicants to please include a current photo of themselves. This is used as a check to ensure that the interview results are attributed to the correct candidate as well as to provide a key memory aid when making our final rankings.

Documents as Required

  • For applicants submitting through CaRMS: Proof of Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required at the time of application. The document must be notarized or certified. See our CaRMS Program Description for a complete list of accepted documents.
  • Language proficiency: Foreign Sponsored Trainees, IMGs, and graduates of select Quebec and New Brunswick medical schools must provide documents at the time of application indicating they meet the English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements set out by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) and are eligible for licensure. 5. Eligibility Considerations

Training Level

  • Open to individuals enrolled as a PGY-3 Core Internal Medicine resident at the time the application is submitted.
  • PGY-3 residents who are off-cycle by more than six months (i.e., with a start date after December 31) are not eligible for the match this year and are encouraged to apply next year.

Training Program

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a Core Internal Medicine residency training program that is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or an American university accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Legal Status

  • Individuals submitting applications through CaRMS Online must be Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Previous Subspecialty Training / Transfers

  • Trainees currently enrolled in subspecialty Internal Medicine training or any training in Internal Medicine beyond the PGY-3 level are not eligible.
  • The R4 match cannot be used for program transfer.

Licensed Physicians

Source of Funding / Source of Medical Degree / Return of Service

  • Canadian or American medical graduates currently enrolled in Core Internal Medicine residency programs in Canadian or American medical schools are eligible to apply.
  • International Medical Graduates (IMGs) are eligible to apply if currently enrolled in a Core Internal Medicine residency program at a Canadian medical school.
  • All IMG applicants must declare any Return of Service obligations on their application and may be disqualified if their provincial obligations preclude subspecialty training.

Additional Criteria for Eligible American Trainees

  • Individuals pursuing residency training in the USA must have received their Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from an institution that is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
  • MCCQE: Applicants who have trained in the USA must provide proof of passing the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam (MCCQE) at the time of application.
  • RCPSC Assessment: Applicants who are training in the USA and meet all of the eligibility requirements must provide a ruling Assessment of Training letter from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).
