About

The China Institute at the University of Alberta (CIUA) is Canada’s only established, multi-disciplinary think tank and research centre focusing solely on China studies. The Institute strives to generate and disseminate knowledge that supports in-depth understanding of today’s China and encourages policy development in response to China’s evolving role in the world.

The Institute was established in 2005 with an endowment fund of $37 million from the Government of Alberta, which matched the appraised value of The Mactaggart Art Collection, donated to the University of Alberta Museums by local philanthropists Sandy and Cécile Mactaggart.

Working with the international research community and government agencies, the China Institute builds and supports China-related research, learning and interdisciplinary partnerships. CIUA also works with its campus partners to promote China-related scholarship at the University of Alberta.

Through a wide range of public forums, research seminars, publications, training and media commentaries, CIUA has emerged as a voice of authority in Canada on political and economic developments inside China and on its foreign policy and its international economic ties, especially in relation to Canada. Current research involves the evolving role of China in trade, energy, investment and foreign affairs.
