Virtual DUSS Scholars Program

 

The University of Alberta’s DUSS (Disrupted Ukrainian Scholars and Students) Initiative is launching the fourth stream of its virtual residency program and welcomes applications from eligible Ukrainian scholars. The program is meant to support up to five Ukrainian scholars currently based in Ukraine or in Canada. The DUSS Initiative will provide successful applicants with $2,000 CDN honoraria to support their work and assist them in establishing scholarly connections with the UAlberta community. Where possible, successful applicants will be paired up with UAlberta mentors working in the same or adjacent fields of research for the purpose of collaboration during their virtual residency.

Application procedure:

To apply, candidates should submit the following documents through the CIUS Awards portal:

  • a detailed résumé/CV,
  • a statement of interest in the virtual DUSS residency detailing the proposed research project (1-2 pages long),
  • a writing sample of their scholarly or literary work, either published or in progress.

All documentation must be submitted in a single PDF file. All the materials must be prepared in English;

Eligibility:

  • For this stream, we are inviting Ukrainian scholars working in the following fields to apply:
    • Ukrainian Diaspora; Ukrainian Folklore; Oral History; Digital Humanities; Ethnography; Propaganda; Memory Studies; Steppe Ukraine.
    • History of Early Modern Europe; the Austro-Hungarian Empire
    • History of Modern Europe; Central and Southern Europe in the 19th-20th centuries
    • Energy Economics; Financial Economics
    • Applied Linguistics; Ukrainian Language and Culture; Language Pedagogy; Linguistic Conversion; Language and Ideology
  • Virtual DUSS scholars must be established academics or doctoral students at the later stages of their programs with a proven record of research work and ongoing affiliation with one of Ukrainian or Canadian higher educational institutions. Early career scholars or postdoctoral researchers are welcome to apply.
  • All candidates must be citizens of Ukraine with primary residence in Ukraine as of 02/24/2022 who are currently based in Ukraine or have relocated to Canada.
  • Proficiency in English is an important prerequisite for a successful application.

Roles/responsibilities:

  • The duration of a virtual residency is 1 March – 31 August 2026; if needed, the appointment may be deferred to September – December 2026.
  • Successful applicants will be expected to engage with the UAlberta scholarly community, promote their work to Canadian and international audiences, and foster academic and cultural connections between Ukrainian and Canadian institutions.
  • Such engagements may include:
    • conference presentations or public talks over the term of the appointment
    • roundtable discussions
    • guest speaking engagements
    • meetings with students or student organizations
    • hosting online sessions with connected departments at UAlberta and in Ukraine.

Total budget: $2,000 CDN/scholar
