Simone Derzi MD, FRCPC

Dr. Simone Derzi is a staff anesthesiologist at the University of Alberta Hospital. She completed her medical training and anesthesiology residency at the University of São Paulo in Brazil before pursuing further training in Canada, including obstetrical anesthesia at McGill University and two fellowships in cardiac anesthesia and intensive care in Toronto and Ottawa.
Dr. Derzi holds a Master’s degree in Epidemiology from the University of Ottawa and certification in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography from the National Board of Echocardiography. Her academic interests include perioperative medicine, clinical epidemiology, and the use of point-of-care and handheld ultrasound in perioperative care and medical education. She is actively involved in teaching residents and medical students.
In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family and exploring the outdoors with her two dogs.
Tim van Haaften MD, FRCPC

Dr. Tim van Haaften was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He completed a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Pharmacology, and a Master’s of Science in Paediatrics at the University of Alberta. He subsequently relocated to Dublin, Ireland in 2007 to attend medical school at Trinity College Dublin. Tim then completed the FRCP(C) anaesthesiology program at the University of Toronto in 2017, and the Thoracic anaesthesiology fellowship at Toronto General Hospital in 2018.
Dr. van Haaften joined the medical staff in Edmonton in 2018, working at both the University of Alberta hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital. He currently serves as the Thoracic anesthesia lead for the RAH. He is heavily involved in resident education via academic half day teaching, simulation sessions, CanNASC evaluation, and was recently named an examiner for the comprehensive oral examination for anaesthesiology with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Michael Zaugg MD, FRCPC

Dr. Zaugg was raised in Zurich, Switzerland, where he attended Medical School and completed his training in Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Intensive Care Medicine. He completed a clinical fellowship in Cardiac Anesthesiology with Dr. J. Kaplan at Mount Sinai Medical Center and Icahan School of Medicine, New York (USA), and subsequently two fellowships in Experimental Anesthesiology (Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. J. Cottrell) and Cell Biology (Department of Cell Biology, Dr. MAQ Siddiqui) at the State University of New York, Health Science Center at Brooklyn, New York (USA). He is the 2005 winner of the IARS Frontiers in Anesthesia Research Award and has published numerous original papers resulting in over 10,000 citations. He completed his Master in Business Administration in 2011, at the Alberta School of Business, University of Alberta, Edmonton.
Dr. Zaugg joined the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, University of Alberta, in 2008 where he is working ever since as a clinician-scientist leading his own CIHR-funded laboratory. His main research focus is cardiac transplantation and more recently parenteral nutrition where he and his wife (Dr. Eliana Lucchinetti) invented a novel lipid emulsion, which is on its way to commercialization.
