University and AASUA agree to formal mediation dates

After consultation with the mediator, the university and AASUA have agreed to formal mediation dates of September 4 and 5, and October 21 and 22, 2025. The meetings schedule page has been updated. The parties last met on March 27 during informal mediation.

24 June 2025

The university applied for formal mediation on May 16 to encourage negotiations to continue after informal mediation concluded in March. Formal mediation differs from informal mediation in that it requires one of the parties to declare an impasse in negotiations. The parties then work with a government-appointed mediator.

Formal mediation is common and very frequently results in successful agreements - as it did in the last round of bargaining with AASUA. University operations, research and student life continue as usual during formal mediation.

The university looks forward to continuing the conversation with AASUA in September, and to successfully reaching a renewal agreement that considers both the valued contributions of academic staff and the broader university community and interests.

Updates pause for summer months

Regular bargaining updates to the community will pause for the summer months, resuming again with negotiations in September.
