Timelines for ratifications of U of A and AASUA’s tentative agreement

Ratification requires support of a simple majority of those who vote.

14 October 2025

A Memorandum of Agreement and draft renewal agreement is now available detailing the changes in the tentative renewal collective agreement between the University of Alberta and AASUA.

As outlined in previous updates, the tentative agreement reflects key items the university heard from AASUA members at the bargaining table, including supporting the Academic Benefits Plan. The agreement considers the realities and broader considerations of the community while providing tangible improvements for all AASUA members.

AASUA members are encouraged to participate in the ratification vote. Your vote is important to ensuring our academic mission continues without interruption, and a return to focusing energies on the university’s core mandate of learning and research.

Timelines confirmed by AASUA

  • AASUA has publicized that it will hold an information-only online general meeting with its membership on Wednesday, Oct. 15 from noon to 1 p.m.
  • AASUA’s ratification vote will be held via electronic ballot from Oct. 16 to 21.

The ratification by AASUA requires a simple majority of those members voting to vote in favour of the tentative agreement. A simple majority means 50 per cent plus one (50% +1) of those members who cast a vote. Details of how to register for the general meeting and voting process can be found on AASUA’s web pages.

University’s ratification

If the agreement is ratified by AASUA, the university’s ratification process will be engaged. The General Faculties Council Executive Committee would review changes to parts of the agreement having to do with procedures for the appointment, promotion, or dismissal of academic staff. The Board Human Resources and Compensation Committee would make a recommendation to the Board of Governors, who would then hold a ratification vote.
