CIUS Represented at A Celebration of Research in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities

Last week, the University of Alberta's College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH) hosted its inaugural showcase event, Research in Uncertain Times: A Celebration of Research in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The afternoon opened with greetings from Dr. Temitope Oriola, Associate Dean (Research), Dr. Chris Andersen, Dean of CSSH, University of Alberta President Bill Flanagan, and a special message from Sylvie A. Lamoureux, Vice-President of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

The showcase featured wide-ranging research from across CSSH. CIUS highlighted four unique projects:

• Undoing the Language of the KGB Files: Indigenous Peoples of Soviet Crimea (1944–1991) – Natalia Khanenko-Friesen & Larysa Bilous
• Ukrainian Displaced Persons in Canada post-2022: Making Home in Times of Peace and War – Natalia Khanenko-Friesen & Mariia Burtseva
• Holodomor: Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) – Henry Prown, HREC
• Developing Videos on UN SDGs for Learning Ukrainian – Olenka Bilash, Mariia Ostroha & Oksana Butkovska

Dr. Henry Prown also presented on his upcoming book, "Communist Propaganda in Pre-Cold War America".

We were pleased to engage with President Flanagan on the upcoming Holodomor MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), “Famine as Genocide in the 20th Century: The Case of the Holodomor,” launching soon. The President thanked CIUS and the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC) for their dedicated work, and expressed his continued support of CIUS projects.
