ULEC Webinar - Mental Health Support Program “Among Educators”
28 November 2025
On November 19, ULEC hosted a webinar featuring Nataliia Demydenko, who presented a Mental Health Support Program originally developed in Ukraine and now partially adapted by her for use in Ukrainian heritage language schools across Canada. The session highlighted the crucial role of emotional well-being among students, teachers, and families, especially given the challenges faced by newcomer learners who escaped the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Nataliia’s Ukrainian language presentation emphasized that academic success depends not only on high-quality instruction but also on the emotional climate in which learning takes place. She introduced the program’s core components, which include ready-to-use educational materials that help students 1) understand their emotions, 2) communicate effectively in stressful situations, and 3) build resilience. The program encourages regular check-ins, reflective discussions, and practical exercises that support both learners and educators in navigating complex emotional experiences.
A significant portion of the webinar addressed the needs of recently arrived Ukrainian children in Canada. Nataliia discussed the social and emotional difficulties many of these students encounter, such as isolation, disrupted peer relationships, and challenges adjusting to a new school environment. She presented adapted materials from Ukrainian mental health initiatives as well as resources from School Mental Health Ontario, emphasizing the importance of cultural relevance and strong interpersonal relationships. Strengthening connections among teachers, students, and families was highlighted as a key factor in supporting effective learning and overall well-being.
Nataliia also announced the launch of monthly online meetings for educators, beginning on November 24. These sessions aim to provide a collaborative space for sharing ideas, discussing challenges, and exploring practical strategies. Participants were introduced to a variety of materials, including lessons focused on well-being, emotional awareness, and stress management. Nataliia underscored the value of incorporating mindfulness techniques into teachers’ daily routines and noted that registration is required to access the full set of program materials.
The interactive Q&A portion reflected strong interest from participants, who shared their needs and asked questions about implementing the program in their schools. ULEC is planning an English language session about this important topic in the near future.
