CSL connects your academic learning with meaningful community volunteer work in Edmonton. Through CSL, students engage with community partners and apply classroom knowledge in real settings!

How do I get started?

  1. Explore CSL Courses with available community opportunities.
  2. Register for your chosen course through Bear Tracks.
  3. Engage in a CSL opportunity relevant to course materials.
  4. If you plan to do more than one CSL course, explore the Certificate in Community Engagement and Service-Learning.
  5. Contact the CSL office with questions at any time!

How do I choose a placement?

Browse the CSL Opportunity Hub to explore available opportunities connected to your class with a CSL component. 

When selecting, please consider:

  • Your interests and strengths
  • Type of volunteering (front-facing or behind the scenes; working with adults or children etc.)
  • Work environment (structured or flexible; in person or virtual)
  • Logistics (such as time commitment per week, transportation, and required scheduling for opportunity etc.)

Next Steps After Choosing an Opportunity

  • Review opportunity details on the CSL Opportunity Hub.
  • Follow your instructor’s instructions for signing up for a CSL opportunity.
  • Contact your community partner to introduce yourself, share which CSL course you are enrolled in, and arrange an initial meeting.

How many hours am I expected to spend at the organization throughout the term?

Students must complete a minimum of 20 volunteer hours per term.

Some courses (e.g., CSL 350 or the Non-Credit Opportunity) require 30 hours. You may of course, exceed the minimum or continue volunteering after the course ends, but this is not required!

What if my placement requires a security check (Police Intervention and/or Youth Intervention)?

  • The CSL office provides instructions for each security check process.
  • CSL sends students a voucher that covers the cost of a Police Information Check. Child Intervention Record Checks are free of charge.
