In medieval theatre, the “Secrets Master” guarded the mysteries of stage illusions. Today, props masters and special effects designers continue this craft, bringing performances to life.
Join April Viczko, BFA ’98, MFA '08, Professor of Theatre Design and Chair in the Department of Drama at the University of Alberta, as she takes us through the history of theatrical effects, from fire and water in the 14th century to today’s cutting-edge digital innovations like virtual and mixed reality. Discover how stage magic has evolved and where it’s headed next!

Professor April Viczko, BFA ‘98, MFA '08, Chair, Department of Drama, is a Professor of Theatre Design in the Drama department. She is a full member and past president of the Associated Designers of Canada. Working on over 100 live productions during the last 30 years, she has designed sets, costumes, lighting and projections for several well-known local, national and international theatre companies. April was the Project Lead for World Stage Design 2022 and has received numerous accolades for her work, along with several awards for her dedication to teaching and research.
