Medical Laboratory Science
Overview
The Medical Laboratory Science degree program allows learners to develop into capable medical laboratory technologists. Medical laboratory technologists are important practitioners within the healthcare system who perform tests on blood, body fluids and tissues, thereby assisting with diagnostic processes and contributing to patient care. During this four-year degree program, students will complete coursework, practice technical skills and experience an extensive clinical practicum.
Benefits
The inclusion of experiential learning opportunities in the Medical Laboratory program allows students to gain hands-on experience in lab techniques and they will learn how to analyze laboratory results. Moreover, students will develop critical thinking skills, carry out research and establish team building and collaboration skills.

- Mandatory Clinical Placement
Eligibility Requirements
- There are specific requirements that students must meet in order to apply for the Medical Laboratory Science program, including pre-professional (e.g., prerequisite course completion), non-academic (e.g.,letter of intent, interview) and post-acceptance requirements (e.g., Police Information Check). Prospective students can explore the admission requirements in further detail here.
Recognition + Compensation
- Clinical practicum experiences are mandatory within this program and are recognized towards degree completion.
Duration, Format + Location
- Before being admitted to the Medical Laboratory Science program, students must complete one year of pre-professional study during which they complete prerequisite coursework that will allow them to develop a basic scientific background necessary for the subsequent years of study and practice.
- After being admitted to the program, students complete 3 years of coursework and practical experience. Year 2 of study involves coursework that enhances students’ scientific knowledge and allows them to develop a strong understanding of disciplines of medical laboratory science. Year 3 is a 38-week clinical practicum during which students complete laboratory rotations within Alberta Precision Laboratories in the Edmonton area. Concurrent course work is also completed in Year 3. During Year 4, students return to classroom environments to engage in further coursework and complete a compulsory research project. Explore the program structure for more information.
- The Medical Laboratory Science program takes place both on-campus and in various laboratory placements in the Edmonton area. Coursework and clinical practicum experiences are in-person.
