Occupational Therapy - Field Placement
Overview
Clinical education is a mandatory component of the MSc in Occupational Therapy degree program. Students will complete a minimum of 28 weeks of clinical education experiences. Fieldwork placements are integrated throughout the degree program and take place in a variety of practice settings including, but not limited to, acute care hospitals, long term care facilities, home care, schools, rehabilitation facilities and private clinics.

Through clinical education experiences, students are able to apply their academic knowledge in real life health care and community care settings. They benefit from the mentorship and guidance of a licensed occupational therapist during their fieldwork experiences, helping them build confidence in practice environments and develop skills and behaviors necessary for their future career in the profession.

Eligibility Requirements
- Clinical education is a mandatory requirement of the MSc in Occupational Therapy and is exclusive to students in this degree program.
Recognition + Compensation
- Clinical placements are unpaid experiences.
- Students will receive a ‘Credit or No Credit’ grade for their placement experiences.
Duration, Format + Location
- Students complete a minimum of 28 weeks of fieldwork experiences. Placements are integrated throughout the degree program, dispersed into four 7-week full-time placements.
- Students complete fieldwork placements in a variety of settings, most placements take place in Alberta, Saskatchewan or NWT. There are limited opportunities to complete placements outside the University of Alberta’s catchment area.
